Things You Should Know Before
Your First Gynecologist Appointment

A gynecologist is a specialist that specifically works with women and helps manage all things that affect the female reproductive system. Most women go to see a gynecologist at least once a year for an annual check-up, just like a primary doctor. Although it’s recommended that a woman starts receiving gynecologist services around 13-15 years old, some women don’t have their first appointment until they are in their twenties. The suggested age is a teenager because most women get their period around that time. Here’s what you can expect the first time you go to an office for gynecologist services:

Asking questions about your health - The primary goal of your gynecologist during your first visit is to get to know you. You will be asked questions about your period, period cramping, itching in your vaginal area, your sex life, and whether you use any kind of birth control. Gynecologist services are supposed to be helpful and informative, not scary. If you are feeling scared, make sure you communicate that to your gynecologist so they can try to make you feel a little more comfortable.

Pap smear - A pap smear is something that is typically avoided for your first gynecologist appointment unless you are 21 years or older. A pap smear is an examination that allows your gynecologist to look at your cervix and grab a few cells from your cervix using a small brush. The cells are then examined under a microscope to check the health of your cervix.

External exam - If you are sexually active, your gynecologist will likely do an external exam to check for signs of sexually transmitted diseases or infections.

Internal exam - Your gynecologist will need to do a minor internal exam to check for growths and cysts on your uterus and ovaries. This will be done by taking two lubricated fingers and sticking them into your vagina.
